According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of uninsured Americans grew from 44.8 million in 2005 to 47 million in 2006.  This five percent increase is the largest one-year increase in the number of uninsured since 2002.

Most Americans without health insurance are the “working poor,” those earning less than $20,614 for a family of four, or less than 100 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL). More than half are not eligible for public programs such as Medicaid and SCHIP and need assistance to purchase private coverage. This group is composed predominately of parents and childless adults who are employed, but have incomes between 100 and 300 percent of the FPL.  Under this income threshold, this population often has tremendous difficulty obtaining and affording adequate health care coverage.

Employer sponsored coverage is much less likely to be offered to low-income workers (70% of the uninsured cannot obtain coverage via their employer or a spouse’s) and the cost of individual insurance is often prohibitive (the average family health insurance policy costs roughly $12,000 per year). No longer should we allow this population to fall through the cracks of our current health care system.

Mission:

To assist the uninsured in obtaining health care coverage in the private marketplace, provide premium assistance, and educate the public on the availability for such coverage.
